"Failing to understand the consequences of our inventions while we are in the rapture of discovery and innovation, seems to be a common fault of scientists and technologists. We have long been driven by the overarching desire to know. That is the nature of science's quest, not stopping to notice that the progress to newer and more powerful technologies can take on a life of its own."

Why the Future Doesn't Need Us: How 21st Century Technologies Threaten to Make Humans an Endangered Species , by Bill Joy

Staying Human in the Computer Age

Most of us use computers everyday and would be hard-pressed to imagine a world without the productivity, accessibility, and ingenuity these machines bring into our lives. But, do we really know what we are doing with this technology? Do we know how this technology is affecting us? The purpose of the conference is to create an opportunity to consider this topic. Participants, inspired by the keynote speeches, by dramatic presentations, and engaged in artistic activities can contemplate these and other related questions, and start a dialogue leading toward to a more conscious relationship with the computer.

Art provides an enlivening, yet restful antidote to technology. Our symposium will include artistic activities which do not require any previous experience.
